How to Replace a Saturn Trunk Lock

Saturn vehicles use a small metal lock cylinder to secure cargo stored in the trunk. If your trunk has been broken into, in most cases this cylinder will be damaged and must be replaced. Replacing the lock cylinder on a Saturn vehicle is well within the abilities of most vehicle owners. You just need a few simple tools and about an hour.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench set
  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Replacement lock cylinder

Removing a Saturn Trunk Lock

  • Disconnect the ground cable from the negative battery terminal by loosening the retaining bolt and pulling the clamp off the negative terminal.

  • Open the trunk.

  • Remove the upholstered panel from the trunk lid. Using a flat-blade screwdriver, carefully pry the panel away from the trunk lid.

  • Disconnect the actuating rod from the lock cylinder by sliding the retaining clip away from the rod. Pull the rod from the cylinder.

  • Remove the lock cylinder retaining clip. Use needle-nose pliers to pull the retaining clip straight up.

  • Remove the lock cylinder from the trunk lid by pulling it out towards the rear of the vehicle.

Installing a New Saturn Trunk Lock

  • Insert the new lock cylinder in the hole in the trunk lid.

  • Reinstall the lock cylinder retaining clip by sliding it over the top of the lock cylinder.

  • Insert the actuating rod into the back of the lock cylinder. Slide the retaining clip over the actuating rod.

  • Reinstall the trunk lid upholstered panel by placing it in position on the trunk lid and pressing the plastic clips into the holes in the trunk lid.

  • Reconnect the ground cable to the negative battery terminal by sliding the clamp over the negative terminal and tightening the retaining bolt.
