How to Remove a Ford Truck Ignition Switch

The ignition switch in a Ford truck is held in place by a small pin inside the base of the switch. The switch has no recommended service life, and it may fail suddenly. When it does, you will need to get another switch from a Ford dealership (for the best fitment and compatibility for your Ford truck). The first step in replacing the switch, however, is removing it.

Things You'll Need

  • Punch pin or 1/8" Allen wrench
  • Turn the ignition key to the "II" position on your Ford truck.

  • Slide the pin or Allen wrench into the release opening under the ignition switch. The hole on most Ford trucks is on the underside of the steering column directly underneath the ignition switch.

  • Push up on the pin or wrench while simultaneously pulling the key out of the ignition.
