How to Fix a Crack in a Plastic Tank

Just about everybody uses a plastic tank for something. Whether it be for storing chemicals, holding fluids in a vehicle or even a fish tank, plastic tanks are all around us. Plastic tanks can be highly breakable, however. The good news is they are quite easily repairable.

Things You'll Need

  • Fine sandpaper
  • Small fiberglass cloth
  • Pre-mixed epoxy solution
  • Epoxy brush
  • Sand down the cracked or broken area of the plastic tank with a fine sandpaper. By doing this, you will remove any jagged edges that may exist, whether visible or microscopically.

  • Cut a section of fiberglass cloth large enough to completely cover the crack or hole in the tank.

  • Set the section of fiberglass cloth over the hole or crack.

  • Apply the epoxy solution using an epoxy brush. Cover the entire fiberglass cloth with the solution, especially including the edges.

  • Let the solution sit for about 20 minutes. The epoxy will harden and bond the fiberglass to the plastic, creating a liquid-tight seal.
