How to Remove a Broken Oil Filter

Changing the oil in a car is essential to long life and proper functioning of your vehicle. Part of an oil change is installing a new oil filter. However, sometimes the old filter will break. A broken oil filter can be difficult to remove by hand, but you can quickly and easily remove it if you have an oil filter wrench.

Things You'll Need

  • Oil filter wrench

Locating the filter

  • After the used oil is drained from the engine, crawl under the car and locate the oil filter. Normally, it is on the right hand or back portion of the engine.

  • Slide the wrench over the filter and clamp it down on a solid portion of the broken filter's perimeter.

  • Turn the wrench counterclockwise until the broken portion of the filter comes off of the spindle. You can then thread a new filter onto the spindle and put in fresh oil as you normally would.
