How to Replace a Mustang Cowl

The cowl on a Mustang is the plastic trim piece that protects the windshield wiper motor. It sits on the outside of the car at the base of the windshield. The wiper blade arms protrude through two holes in the cowl. These trim pieces tend to crack when exposed to extreme cold temperatures on older Mustangs. When this happens, you'll need to know how to replace a Mustang cowl. Fortunately, the job can be completed in about 10 minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Pry the screw covers off of the cowl. There are typically four to five screw covers on the cowl, depending the year of your Mustang. Although it is a bit tricky, you can pry these covers off by wedging a small flat-tip screwdriver.

  • Remove the screws holding the cowl in place.

  • Pull the wiper blade arm away from the windshield until the arm locks in a vertical position. Pull the cowl off the windshield and install the new cowl.

  • Secure the cowl to the base of the windshield with the retaining screws, fold the wiper arms back down to the windshield and replace the screw covers.
