How to Fix Power Seats in a GMC Sierra

Drivers of 1999 GMC Sierras may find an annoying creaking or jingling noise coming from their power seats. These noises can distract a driver from paying attention to the road, but they can be quickly remedied. Learn how to quiet the noise by reading the following tips.

Things You'll Need

  • Plastic retainers
  • Latch assembly
  • Torque wrench

Fix a Creaking Noise Located at the Rear of the Front Cushion

  • Take off the front 40 percent seat cushion and disconnect any electrical harnesses.

  • Bypass removing the seat's back nuts by removing the rear plastic retainers on the seat's back while squeezing the retainer's backings.

  • Put in new plastic retainers and reconnect any electrical harnesses. Reinstall the front 40 percent cushion.

Repair a Jingling Noise Located at the Latch of the Folding Center Seat

  • Position the front 40 percent seats so that they are forward as much as they can go.

  • Undo the J-clip so that the seat trim's upper portion lets go of tension and releases. Find the upper latch attachment bolts.

  • Remove the upper latch attachment bolts, the latch cover attachment screw, the upper latch cover, free pivot TORX bolt from the seat frame's left side, the folding center seat back, the lower latch cover, the lower latch attachment bolts, and the latch assembly.

  • Place a new latch assembly on the seat frame's center and put the lower latch attachment bolts to secure it. Torque the bolts to 25 Nm (18 foot pounds).

  • Install the lower latch cover and position the seat back's center on the seat's frame. Screw in the free pivot TORX bolts to the seat frame's left side and torque them to 25 Nm (18 foot pounds) using a torque wrench. Position the upper latch cover over the lower latch cover, install the attachment screw and torque it to 3 Nm (26 inch pounds). Put in the upper latch attachment bolts and torque them to 25 Nm (18 foot pounds).

  • Use the J-clip to close the seat trim cover's upper right part.

  • Adjust the front 40 percent seats to your preferred position and verify functionality.
