The 2001 Monte Carlo is a true sports car capable of high RPMs and fast speeds. However, even the most aggressive of vehicles can be stopped by a malfunctioning thermostat. If you've run into overheating or lack of heating with your Monte Carlo, it's time to replace that broken thermostat or risk causing damage to your engine. A couple of dollars in parts can save you thousands by avoiding an engine rebuild.
Remove the two bolts that secure the thermostat cover to the intake manifold of the Monte Carlo with an adjustable wrench. Set the bolts off to the side to be used again. Pull the thermostat cover off of the intake and push it and the radiator hose off to the side so you can access the thermostat located inside of the intake manifold.
Pull the old thermostat out of the intake and remove the old paper gasket between the manifold and the thermostat cover. No special tools are needed for the removal of either part; they can be removed by hand and thrown away.
Place a small bead of RTV gasket maker on each side of the paper gasket and allow it to dry for 15 minutes before placing the gasket back onto the manifold.
Set the new thermostat into the intake manifold with the end marked "top" facing out of the intake manifold. Bolt the thermostat cover back into place using the old housing bolts.
