Directions for Changing a Thermostat on a 1996 Ford Contour SE

It's probable that your 1996 Ford Contour SE has more then 100,000 miles on it and if it's still on the road it's probable that those miles have not been ones filled with aggressive driving. You've likely taken steps to ensure regular oil changes and tire rotations. However, most people forget about the cooling system. If you've never replaced the thermostat on your Contour you are risking a complete engine failure if the thermostat stops working.

Things You'll Need

  • 1996 Ford Contour SE thermostat
  • 1996 Ford Contour SE thermostat housing
  • RTV silicone gasket maker
  • Screwdriver
  • Wrench
  • Remove the upper radiator hose from the thermostat housing by removing the securing clamp that holds the hose onto the the housing. A flat head screwdriver can be used to pry the clip loose. Inspect the radiator hose for any cracks or dry rot. If any is present, a new hose should be installed.

  • Remove the bolts that hold the thermostat housing onto the intake manifold of the Contour. Due to the age of the vehicle, a new thermostat housing should be used. However, if close inspection shows no stress cracks, the old housing can be reused.

  • Pull the old thermostat out of the intake manifold and discard it. Pull the old thermostat gasket off of the top of the intake manifold and discard it as well.

  • Place a bead of RTV silicone on the bottom edge of the thermostat housing and allow it to cure for 15 minutes.

  • Place the new thermostat into the intake manifold with the end marked "up" facing out of the manifold.

  • Place the thermostat housing back onto the intake manifold of the Contour and bolt it into place.

  • Slide the radiator hose back onto the thermostat housing and secure it with the clip.
