How to Put a Belt on a 1998 Chevy Camaro

I used to have a 1998 Chevrolet Camaro coupe with the 3.8-liter, V-6, GM 3800 Series II Ecotec engine. It would do a quarter mile in less than 16 seconds, which wasn't too shabby for me. Chevy recommends that the accessory drive belt be inspected every 60,000 miles and the last time I performed the inspection, I decided it would be better if I changed it instead of waiting for it to break.

Having At It

  • I put a socket and ratchet on the drive belt tensioner bolt and then rotated it clockwise to release tension on the belt. I then slipped the belt off the tensioner and all the pulleys. After wiggling the new belt in around all the pulleys according to the belt routing sticker under the hood, I rotated the tensioner again so I could slip the belt back on the tensioner pulley. Because it's a spring-loaded tensioner, no other adjustment was needed.
