How to Remove Speakers From a Monte Carlo

The Chevy Monte Carlo has a long and storied history that goes back to 1970. However, the Monte Carlo was discontinued after the 2007 model year. The final generation (sixth generation, 2000 to 2007) continued the Monte Carlo's typical design, selling in coupe configuration only. Removing the speakers from the Monte Carlo is the same for all last generation models. Unfortunately, the Monte Carlo does not have a separate speaker grille (it's integrated with the door panel), so the entire door panel must be removed to access the speakers.

Things You'll Need

  • Pliers
  • Phillips Screwdriver
  • Door panel tool J38778 (or equivalent)
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable (--) with the pliers. You'll be handling wiring components from the door power equipment (windows and locks) and the speakers. Unhooking the negative battery cable will prevent shock.

  • Remove the Phillips screw from the upper corner (toward the dash) of the door panel. Place this screw (and all subsequent screws) you remove in a small cup for safe keeping.

  • Remove the three Phillips screws from the door handle bezel. Pull the bezel away from the door panel (you may need to pull the handle open to maneuver the bezel around it).

  • Insert door trim tool J38778 between the door panel and the door, lining it up with the internal door fasteners. There are eight fasteners around the perimeter of the door; you'll need to insert the tool onto each fastener, and then push the backward to pop them out. Refer to the diagram in the Reference section if you need assistance finding the fasteners. Once the fasteners are popped out, the door panel is ready to be removed.

  • Push the door panel straight up to move it over the catch on the top portion of the door. Carefully pull the door panel away from the door a few inches. Reach behind the door panel and unplug the connections for the power door lock and the power window. Once these are disconnected, move the door panel away.

  • Remove the screws that mount the speaker to the door. Carefully pull the speaker out to access its electrical connection. Depress the connection's tab to unhook it. Remove the speaker. Repeat the procedure for both doors, if necessary.
