How to Remove the Front Speakers in a 2008 Altima

Nissan's 2008 Altima was offered in several trim levels, ranging from the base 2.5-liter four-cylinder model to the sportier 3.5-liter V-6 Coupe. While the high-end trim levels were equipped with a premium Bose-developed nine-speaker sound system, lower-end Altima models were fitted with a standard six-speaker system mated to a single-disc CD player. This fact isn't enough to stop the true automotive audiophile, as the stock speakers can be replaced with high-quality aftermarket speakers. Removing the front door-mounted speakers can be accomplished by removing the door panel that conceals the speakers' mounting points.

Things You'll Need

  • Combination wrench
  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Shop towel
  • Door trim removal tool

Front Speaker Removal

  • Open the Altima's hood and support it in its fully-opened position, using the hood prop rod. Disconnect the negative battery cable using a combination wrench. Move the battery cable away from the battery's negative terminal and the Altima's frame.

  • Open the front door completely. Slip a small flat-head screwdriver between the upper edge of the door lamp and the bottom of the inner door panel, then pry the lamp out of the door. Unplug the lamp connector.

  • Pull the door release handle and hold it in place to reveal a small lost between the release handle panel and the inner escutcheon cover. Pry the escutcheon cover out of the release handle panel to reveal the panel mounting screw. Remove the screw using a Phillips screwdriver.

  • Wrap the tip of your flat screwdriver in a shop towel, then insert it between the door panel and the front of the armrest cushion. Pry up the cushion to free its mounting tab, then lift the armrest cushion out of the door panel.

  • Pry the rear of the power window and door lock switch panel up and out of the door panel, using the towel-wrapped flat-head screwdriver. Unplug the connectors from the bottom of the switch panel. Remove both bolts hidden within the switch panel mounting area using a Phillips screwdriver.

  • Release the door panel clips, located along the perimeter of the door, using a door trim removal tool. Lift the door panel upward until it can be pulled away from the door. Remove the door latch and lock cables from the back of the door panel.

  • Unscrew all three screws securing the front speaker to the door, using a Phillips screwdriver. Pull the speaker away from the door and unplug the speaker wires.

Front Speaker Installation

  • Connect the speaker wires to the terminals at the rear of the new speaker. Hold the speaker against the door and align the speaker mounting holes. Screw the speaker screws into place using a Phillips screwdriver.

  • Hold the inner door panel against the door. Reconnect the door release and door lock cables. Hook the top of the door panel over the upper edge of the door. Firmly push the door panel clips into place.

  • Screw the door panel mounting screws into place at the bottom of the power window and door lock switch panel mounting area using a Phillips screwdriver.
Plug the power window and door lock connectors into the bottom of the power window and lock switch panel. Slip the hook at the front of the switch panel into the door panel, then push the rear of the switch panel until it snaps into place.

  • Slide the hook at the rear of the armrest cushion into the door panel, then push down on the front of the cushion until it snaps into place.

  • Screw the door release handle panel screw into place using a Phillips screwdriver. Pull the release lever and hold it in place. Slip the tab at the front of the escutcheon cover into the release handle panel, then push the rear of the cover until it snaps into place. Release the handle.

  • Reconnect the door lamp, then slip the tabs at the bottom of the lamp into the door panel. Push the top of the door lamp into the panel.

  • Reconnect the negative battery cable using a combination wrench. Lower the Altima's hood.
