My 2000 Dodge Caravan Ignition Switch Won't Move

The ignition switch on your vehicle is the key slot located just to the right of the steering column. It is used to start your vehicle, and it can stop working for a number of reasons. On the 2000 Dodge Caravan, the switch might stop working if it gets stuck, and this will prevent you from using your vehicle. When this happens, there are a number of troubleshooting steps you can follow to remedy the problem.

  • Insert your key into the ignition and place your hand on the steering wheel. The power steering may have been stuck under hydraulic pressure, and you can attempt to relieve this with the steering wheel. Turn the wheel hard in both directions as you attempt to turn the key.

  • Use a pressurized air can to remove any debris from inside the cylinder. These may be stopping the cylinder from moving, and you can remove the debris by spraying the air into the cylinder.

  • Attempt to move the cylinder with a different key. The teeth on your key may have worn down, and a new key might work. If it does, throw away the old one and get copies made of the new one.

  • Make sure your gear shift selector is positioned in park. Otherwise, you may not be able to turn your key.

  • Take the panels off of the steering column around the ignition cylinder. Attempt to troubleshoot any problems from the inside that might be restricting the key from turning the cylinder.
