How to Install a Warn Winch 8000

The Warn Winch M8000 is rated for medium duty and 8,000 pounds of pulling force. When properly installed on the front bumper of your off-road vehicle, it can pull you to solid ground when stuck in the mud. A winch works by pulling in a wire-rope with a powerful electric motor. The winch is wired to the vehicle's battery to provide power. Installing a winch will first require that you purchase and install the correct mounting plate.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket set
  • Torque wrench
  • Wrench set
  • Set the winch's roller and fairlead on the winch mounting plate and fasten with the supplied bolts, lock nuts and washers. Tighten with wrench.

  • Guide the winch's wire rope through the fairlead and install the steel hook on the end with the supplied nuts, washers and bolts.

  • Position the winch on the mounting plate so that its bolt holes line up with the mounting bracket. Insert four bolts through bottom of the mounting plate and secure with lock washers and lock nuts. Torque these bolts to 30-35 foot-pounds of torque.

  • Install the solenoid mounting bracket to the mounting plate and tighten with a wrench. Fasten the solenoid to the mounting bracket.

  • Connect the green and blue wires from the winch's remote control to the similarly colored terminals on the solenoid.

  • Connect the blue and yellow wires from the winch's motor to the solenoid terminals. The yellow wire will fasten to the terminal-marked positive motor and the blue wire will fasten to the terminal-marked negative motor.

  • Run the red and black wires from the solenoid to the vehicle's battery. Back the terminal bolts off on the battery and attach the red wire to the positive terminal and the black wire to the negative terminal. Tighten the terminal bolts down.
