How to Install a Cowl Scoop on a Steel Hood

A cowl scoop can add a customized look to your vehicle and are available in a variety designs and shapes. Cowl scoops for a steel hood can be made of metal, plastic or fiberglass. You can install the cowl scoop yourself to save money. Most cowl scoop installations require the use of just a few basic tools.

Things You'll Need

  • Cowl scoop
  • Marker
  • Drill
  • Drill bit set
  • Jigsaw
  • Metal jigsaw blade
  • Rivets
  • Rivet gun
  • Place the cowl scoop in the desired location on the steel hood. Trace the outline of the cowl scoop with the marker to make a pattern.

  • Place a 3/8 inch metal drill bit in the drill. Drill a hole about one inch inside of the marked cowl scoop outline.

  • Place a steel blade in the jigsaw. Place the jigsaw blade inside the 3/8 inch hole. Cut out an opening in the hood with the jigsaw. Stay about an inch inside of the cowl scoop pattern.

  • Place a drill bit in the electric drill. Follow the manufacturer's recommendations for the proper drill bit size for the rivets. The drill bit size must match the rivet size.

  • Hold the cowl scoop firmly in place. Drill holes about every four inches along the flange on the cowl scoop for the rivets. Space the holes evenly.

  • Insert a rivet into the rivet gun. Place the rivet into one of the drilled holes. Squeeze the handle on the rivet gun until it pops the rivet into place. Repeat this process on the rest of the holes in the cowl flange to secure it to the hood.
