How to Red Stripe My Rims

The rims of a vehicle are an often-modified area, used to create subtle or bold differences in appearance. According to David Vespremi, author of "Car Hacks & Mods for Dummies," a common rim modification is adding a colored stripe to match the vehicle's color. For example, if you have a red vehicle, a red stripe might enhance its overall image. Adding a stripe to your rims is not a difficult process; it requires only a few simple supplies and an hour of spare time.

Things You'll Need

  • Clean rag
  • Small paintbrush
  • Red enamel paint
  • Paint sealant spray
  • Wash the rim with a clean rag dipped in soapy water. This will remove any dirt or debris from the surface.

  • Decide where you would like to paint your line on the rim. Enamel paint is difficult to remove. Look at different pictures of striped rims to help you decide. If your rims have an indentation on them, this might be a good location for the stripe.

  • Dip a small paintbrush into red enamel paint. Submerge only the tips of the bristles in the paint rather than the entire tip of the paintbrush.

  • Carefully begin to paint the stripe on the rim, following an even line. If you want the stripe to stand out, make it thicker, if you want it to be a small accent, make it thin.

  • Dip the brush back into the paint as necessary until you have completed the stripe around the rim. Allow the paint to dry for one hour.

  • Spray paint sealant over the entire rim. Spraying the entire rim keeps it an even tone overall. Allow the sealant to dry for 24 hours before driving the vehicle.

  • Repeat the process with each rim.
