How to Remove Tints on Rear Lights

Car light tint can fade and crack and even start to peel after an extended period of time. Weather, the sun and fender benders can all damage the tint on your car lights. Removing the tint from the rear lights is easy. Tint is applied by either being glued on (a decal of sorts) or painted on. The removal process will depend on the tinting application type. Removing glued-on tint from your rear lights is much easier than removing painted-on tint.

Things You'll Need

  • Razor blade
  • Fine grade steel wool
  • Bucket of warm water
  • 2 washcloths
  • Plastic polish

Glued-on Tint Removal

  • Slip the razor blade under the corner of the tint. Start at the outside corner nearest the door.

  • Gently push the razor blade forward, lifting the tint. Continue until you have pulled up an inch of the tint. Do not cut the tint. Rolling the tint in your fingers may make it easier to remove.

  • Grab the tint firmly and slowly pull it away from the light. The tint should lift easily from the light.

Painted-on Tint Removal

  • Dip the steel wool into a bucket of warm water, and wring out any moisture.

  • Rub the steel wool over the tint. Start in the corner and use a circular motion. Make sure to use gentle pressure so you do not scratch the plastic. Wet the steel wool often.

  • Dip a washcloth into the water, and wipe down the rear lights. Allow them to air dry.

  • Apply a plastic polish to the rear lights with a second washcloth if you created any scratches.
