How to Refinish Headlights

Drivers put cars through torture. Work, extracurricular activities for the kids, the supermarket---we take our cars everywhere and it shows. We pay attention to our scuffed paint jobs and our filthy interiors, but we often neglect an important safety features in our cars: the headlights. Cloudy, yellowing headlights are an inevitability of car usage, but it's also unsafe, especially when driving around at night. In a couple of hours, you can restore the clearness and safety of your headlights by using waterproof sandpaper and polisher, avoiding the costly fee of brand-new headlights.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 Towels or microfiber cloths
  • 800-Grit wet/dry sandpaper
  • 2000-Grit wet/dry sandpaper
  • Polishing compound/solution
  • Ammonia-based cleaning solvent
  • Electric buffer (optional) w/buffing compound
  • Wipe off dirt and particles with a towel or microfiber cloth dampened with an ammonia-based cleaning solution, such as Windex or Simple Green.

  • Sand the wet headlights with the 800-grit sandpaper. Sand the lights until you've reached the desired amount of clarity or until the yellow tint has been fully removed. This process may need to be repeated twice.

  • Sand the headlights with 2000-grit sandpaper to smooth out the roughness from the previous step. This higher grit will leave the headlight with a sleeker finish.

  • Polish the headlights with a polishing compound, such as Turtlewax or 3M, with a microfiber cloth or a towel. This will leave your headlights looking clearer.

  • Buff at 1000K with an electric buffer and a buffing compound if you have one. This step is optional and will alleviate some of the time spent polishing.

  • Remove remaining residue from the compounds by wiping the lights down once more with a towel or microfiber cloth dampened with a cleaning solution.
