How to Troubleshoot a Cat Bulldozer

The performance of a Cat bulldozer depends upon proper maintenance, including the use of fluids, and the adjustment and replacement of damaged or worn components. Signs of problems that require attention include abnormal sounds, sluggish operation or a totally inoperable machine. Fortunately, basic troubleshooting can help owners identify the cause and solution to each problem.

  • Fix a loose battery connection. Turn the engine start switch key to the "Off" position. Locate the two batteries under the access door on each side of the bulldozer. Disconnect battery cables and remove dirt and debris with a clean cloth. Apply petroleum jelly to the terminals before reconnecting cables.

  • Replace a worn or damaged serpentine belt. A common sign of a worn belt is a loud squeal caused by belt slippage. Examine the condition of the belt; if it is damaged, replace it. Insert a ratchet with a square drive into the square hole on the tensioner. Rotate the tensioner counterclockwise with the ratchet to loosen the belt. Remove the damaged belt, then replace it with a new one. Rotate the tensioner clockwise to add tension to the belt.

  • Fix an overheating Cat bulldozer. Check the coolant level in the sight gauge, located on the upper-right side of the radiator tank. If the gauge indicates low levels of coolant, slowly loosen the cooling system pressure cap to relieve pressure. Once removed, place the cap to the side and slowly pour an Extended Life Coolant that meets Caterpillar EC-1 specifications into the cooling system. Fill coolant to the indicator line.
