How to Troubleshoot a Stanadyne DS4

The Stanadyne DS4 fuel injector plugs into off-road vehicles to supply appropriate power. The DS4, an electronic injector, uses diesel fuel. Though typically powerful, the device sometimes suffers from problems that require the replacement or tightening of parts. If troubleshooting fails to solve the problem, take your vehicle to a mechanic immediately. Driving a car with fuel-injection problems typically wears down the moving parts, pipes and fittings of the engine.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench
  • Fuel
  • Air filter
  • Examine the Stanadyne DS4's fuel level. Raise the fuel cover and look into the tank. If it is not full, add new fuel to the tank.

  • Replace the fuel filter. Unscrew the filter bolt from the filter mount using a wrench. Set the bolt aside. Pull the filter from its place in the system and discard it. Push a new filter into place and secure it with the filter bolt.

  • Tighten the fuel filter vent, located next to the fuel filter, using a wrench. It should be fully tightened.

  • Remove the lift pump outlet pipe. Loosen the pipe's fittings using a wrench and pull the pipe from the injector system. Set it aside. Examine the manual lift lever to determine if there are any air bubbles in the fuel. If there are air bubbles, replace the lift pump with a new pump. Push the lift pump outlet pipe into place and secure it with a wrench.

  • Loosen the injector pipes using a wrench. Remove the pipes and set them aside. Turn the engine 180 degrees using the vehicle's starter motor. Examine the fuel lines to check for air bubbles. If there are any air bubbles, the system may require complete replacement.

  • Examine the fuel injector lines. Each of the bursts should exude an equal amount of fuel. If the fuel bursts are not equal, the fuel injector pipe requires replacement.

  • Reconnect and tighten the pipes. Turn the engine back to its original position using the starter motor.
