2003 Mitsubishi Lancer Turns Over But Won't Start

Troubleshooting your vehicle when it won't start can annoying, especially when you have no idea where to start looking for the problem. Fixing a no-start problem on a 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer can be a matter of going through a simple checklist. One thing you won't have to check is the battery. If the car is turning over, then the battery still works.

  • Check the fuel tank to see if it is empty. Put a few gallons of gas into the fuel tank to cover the possibility that your fuel gauge is broken. Crawl underneath the vehicle and trace your fuel line from the fuel tank to the engine. Look for areas along the fuel line that may be corroded or leaking gas. Call a professional mechanic if you notice areas along the fuel line that may be corroded.

  • Locate your fuel filter and your fuel pump. Consult your owner's manual for help finding the fuel filter and the fuel pump. Inspect both components to make sure they are in working order. Look for corrosion, excessive dirt, loose wires and holes in the fuel filter and fuel pump. Replace components if necessary.

  • Go to the hood area of the vehicle and locate the timing belt cover. Remove the timing belt cover. Inspect the entire length of the timing belt to ensure that it is still intact. Call a professional mechanic if you notice that the timing belt has either slipped off or snapped completely.

  • Locate the spark plug near the cylinder head of the engine. Inspect the spark plug for rusty areas or dampness. Make sure the spark plug connection is secure. Purchase a spark plug tester and test the spark plug to make sure it is functioning properly. Replace the spark plug if necessary.
