My Dodge RAM Won't Idle and it Surges

If your Dodge Ram will not idle or dies while idling, or if it seems to surge, this is a sign that the fuel pump relay may be going out. The fuel pump relay on your Dodge Ram is an electrical device that powers your fuel pump. Your fuel pump is responsible for delivering fuel through your injectors when you accelerate. The fuel pump relay on your Dodge Ram is located inside the main relay panel box, inside your engine compartment.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench
  • Replacement relay
  • Pop the hood on your Dodge Ram truck, loosen the negative (or black) battery cable and remove it.

  • Open your Ram's relay panel and find your fuel pump relay. The location of the relay may depend on the year of your truck. However, if you look on the inside of the relay panel lid, there will be a diagram that will show the exact location of the relay.

  • Pull the old fuel pump relay from your Ram and plug in the new one. Replace your relay box cover.

  • Replace your Ram's negative battery cable.
