The wheel speed sensor measures the speed of your 2002 Hyundai's wheel rotation and sends that data to the vehicle's computer. This information is then used to apply the proper amount of braking power without locking the brakes. If the speed sensor malfunctions, the brakes on your car tend to lock when applied suddenly. The speed sensor is located on the axle on the inner face of the wheel on one side of the vehicle, both front and back. Replacing the speed sensor is a simple job you can easily do yourself.
Disconnect the negative battery cable sing a ratchet and socket, then set the emergency brake.
Raise the front of the car using a jack. Let it rest on jack stands. Remove the tire on the driver side of the vehicle using a tire tool.
Unbolt and remove the wheel speed sensor, which is located directly behind where the wheel assembly was, using a ratchet and socket.
Remove the mud ground, front wheel guard, and rear side pad from the speed sensor using your hands.
Pull the electrical connections from the speed sensor. Attach the rear side pad, front wheel guard and mud ground to the new wheel speed sensor, then reconnect the electrical connections by hand.
Install the new speed sensor using a ratchet and socket, then torque the mounting bolts to between five and eight foot-pounds of pressure using a torque wrench.
Reinstall the front tire. Lower the vehicle and perform steps 1 through 6 for the driver side rear tire. Afterward, torque the speed sensor for the rear wheel to between 12 and eight foot-pounds of pressure using a torque wrench.
Reinstall the rear tire using a tire tool. Lower the vehicle and reattach the battery cable.
