How to Test a Trailer Wiring Harness

A basic trailer lighting system, consisting of brake, signal and marker lights, is required by law. These lights provide the necessary illumination to alert other drivers to the location and potential braking of your vehicle. Because of the increased risks of towing a trailer, it is important that you maintain these systems -- not just for legal protection, but also for safety. It is a good habit to test the lights prior to every trip with your trailer.

Things You'll Need

  • Vehicle with trailer connector
  • Friend
  • Connect the trailers wiring harness to a dependable vehicle's trailer connector.

  • Test all of the possible lighting sequences using a friend to observe the trailers lights. Apply the vehicle's brakes and confirm with them they are illuminating as required.

  • Turn on the right signal and confirm it's operational. Repeat for the left signal.

  • Turn on the vehicle's marker lights and check every marker on the trailer for proper illumination.
