How to Turn the GPS System in an Automobile Off

As of 2011, many newer vehicles have built-in GPS tracking systems installed. The GPS tracking system tracks your location and provides street-by-street navigation to your desired location. This is a service provided for a fee by companies such as OnStar. To disable the GPS tracking system, you must disable the vehicle communication and information module that was installed in your vehicle by OnStar.

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdriver
  • Contact OnStar or the service provider and cancel your subscription or request that the GPS navigation is disabled.

  • Disable the GPS system manually if you just want to disable it temporarily. Insert the car key into your vehicle’s trunk lock. Turn the key to release the trunk from the latch.

  • Remove the tub cover that’s placed on the floor of the trunk and locate the sill plate.

  • Unscrew the four rear cargo net holders on the sill plate with a screwdriver.

  • Use both hands to pull the sill plate up. Put it aside in a safe place.

  • Use the screwdriver to disconnect the right-side cargo holders located on the side of the car and at the bottom right of the panel.

  • Pull the panel off with both hands so that the vehicle control module is exposed. You don’t need to completely remove the side panel.

  • Locate the module on the side. There are three connectors aiming downwards. Disconnect each connector.

  • Replace the side trim panel and screw the black cargo net holders into place. Replace the sill plate and make sure the snap holes are aligned to the panel’s bottom side. Insert the cargo holders and screw them in place.
