How to Change Low Profile Auto Tires

Today it is not uncommon to see a vehicle with very thin tires. Some people refer to these tires as "rubber bands" because of how low to the ground they are. These types of tires are called low profile tires. Low profile tires are popular mainly for cosmetic purposes. They are not very comfortable to drive on unless your car has a fantastic suspension. Another negative of low profile tires is how they wear out. A low profile tire usually wears out much faster than the stock tire. When a tire shop changes your low profile tires, it is mostly done on a special tire machine designed for difficult tires to change.

Things You'll Need

  • Valve core tool
  • Rim clamp tire machine with upper and lower bead depressors
  • Air compressor
  • Remove the air from the tire with the valve core tool.

  • Examine the tire machine to review its parts and operation. You will notice that this tire machine has added parts from a standard tire machine. You will see an upper and lower bead depressor. These bead depressors are designed to help you lower the bead below the drop center of the wheel. These added parts help with the installation of low profile tires and any tire with a stiff sidewall. You will see that the bead depressors are controlled by a lever for each. The levers work in an up and down motion to control the hydraulic up and down control.

  • Break the beads on the tire with the bead breaker on the tire machine.

  • Lift the tire onto the tire machine plate and clamp it down like you would normally do with your rim clamp tire machine.

  • Move the tire removal arm over to the tire and use the tire removal bar to pull the tire over the arm.

  • Position your lower bead depressor under the bottom tire bead being careful not to hit the bottom of the wheel. Lift the control lever for the bottom bead depressor and it will apply pressure to the bottom of the tire to help the tire off the rim.

  • Remove the top bead from the wheel as you would normally do so with the rim clamp machine.

  • Install your new tire the way you normally would except that when you install the top bead remember to use the top bead depressor to push the bead down below the drop center as you install the tire.

  • Air up the tire with the air compressor and install the valve core with the valve core tool.
