How to Remove a 1995 Honda Civic Distributor

There are certain components of your 1995 Honda Civic that are designed to wear out and be replaced at certain intervals during routine tune ups. The distributor is one of these components. It is a relatively small plastic cap that houses a spinning rotor and is connected to the starter and spark plugs by thick rubber cables. The rotor, as it spins, contacts terminals inside the cap sending electricity to fire the spark plugs in a specific order. Remove the distributor to perform routine car maintenance.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips Head screwdriver
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Socket wrench set
  • Map the wires coming out of the distributor by marking them with tape. Remove the wires. It is essential they are replaced in proper order.

  • Disconnect two electrical connectors on the left side of the distributor. Remove the vacuum hose and O-ring. Remove four mounting bolts and pull the distributor toward the front of the car to remove.

  • Crank the engine until the camshaft pulley is aligned. The pulley has two leveling marks and the word 'Up' written on it. The word 'Up' should sit at 12 o'clock with the two leveling marks level should be flush with the top line of the engine block behind the pulley.

  • Install a new O-ring on the distributor housing.

  • Sit the new distributor into place. Lock the distributor's gear assembly by turning the shaft until the distributor seats in the cylinder head.

  • Replace the mounting bolts, electrical connectors and ignition wires properly.
