How to Program a Toyota ECM Flash

Most Toyota vehicles come with a set of keys that are set to work with only that vehicle's particular Engine Control Module (ECM) to prevent theft or confusion with keys from other Toyota vehicles. If you have lost your original Toyota keys or want to get a new key, it is possible to take the vehicle to a dealer or mechanic who will "Flash" the system to allow you to program new keys to work in the locks and ignition switch.

  • Ensure that all of the doors and windows are closed properly on your vehicle before beginning. Insert the key you want to program with the vehicle's ECM into the lock on the driver's side door and lock it. Wait a second, then turn the key in the opposite direction to unlock it. Get into the vehicle and close the driver's side door.

  • Insert the key into the ignition switch. Do not turn the switch; just allow the key to sit in the ignition switch. The security light on your dashboard will light up and remain lit. If you are just programming one key, wait 15 seconds, then remove the key from the switch. Press down on the brake five times to save the key.

  • Wait only 5 seconds to remove the key if you are planning on programming more than one key. Once you remove the first key, insert the second one into the ignition switch and let it sit there for 5 seconds. Remove the second key and replace it with a third key. Wait 5 seconds and remove the third key from the ignition.

  • Wait for the security light to power off. This will indicate your keys were saved. If you have programmed more than one key, you do not need to press the brakes to save your keys. Wait 30 seconds after programming is finished to attempt to use any of the keys you have programmed.
