How to Read a Transmission Fluid Dipstick on a Ford Escape

The transmission fluid dipstick is an important tool that indicates the need for transmission fluid in your Ford Escape. In order to get a proper dipstick reading, your engine must be running at operating temperature. Based on the dipstick reading, you can choose to add more fluid or leave it as is. It's important to keep proper transmission fluid levels so that your car runs smoothly and can shift gears properly.

Things You'll Need

  • Shop rag
  • Open the hood of the car and prop it up with the hood rod.

  • Find the circular, colored loop near the back of the engine. This is the transmission fluid dipstick.

  • Remove the dipstick and wipe away all fluid. Dip it back into its well and remove it again.

  • Locate the "FILL" line at the bottom of the stick. Fluid should be at or just above the line. If it falls beneath the line, more fluid is needed.
