How to Drain the Gas Tank of a Car

If you ever have to drain the gas tank of your car for any reason, you don't have to break your back. It's not as easy getting the gas out as it was to get it in, but you can empty your tank without straining yourself or getting your clothes soiled.

  • Drive the car around until it's drained completely of gas. Of course, this takes precision, since you should have at least enough gas to get you home and run out just as you pull into the driveway or in front of your house.

  • Look under the bottom of the gas tank for a cap called a "drain cock." Put a tub or pan under the cock that to catch any gas. Move to the side as you loosen the cap to drain the tank. Wear safety glasses to avoid any gas splashing into your eyes. If you don't have a drain cock on your gas tank, move on to Step 3.

  • Find a rubber hose or fuel line that comes out of the gas tank. This should be in the lowest point off the gas tank. Place your tub or pan under the point at which this hose connects to the gas tank. Loosen the clamp that secures the fuel line to the tank, so you can pull out the hose. The gas should start draining as you pull the hose from the gas tank.
