Ford 2002 Explorer Error Codes

Ford 2002 Explorer error codes can be frustrating for owners of these slightly older sport utility vehicles. Sometimes an error code appears because a fuse has gone bad; other times, an error code can indicate a major issue. Regardless of how the vehicle seems to be running, if a "Check Engine" light appears on the dash, it's wise to have the error code checked by a mechanic or at an auto parts store that has an error code checker.

Error Code P0745

  • If the error code checker returns a P0745 code, it is indicative of a transmission issue. Error codes in the 700s refer to transmission problems. The P0745 error code refers specifically to a malfunctioning pressure control solenoid. This should be checked by a mechanic as soon as possible.

Error Code P0715

  • Another common error code in the 700 series, meaning it is related to the transmission, is P0715. This particular error refers to a malfunctioning input turbine speed-sensor circuit. As with any other error code involving the transmission, to preserve the life of the vehicle and for the safety of its occupants, this problem should be checked by a mechanic as soon as possible.

Error Code P0402

  • Error codes in the 400s refer to problems with the auxiliary emission controls. P0402 indicates a malfunction in the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system. This usually indicates that the Explorer's EGR valve has malfunctioned and needs to be replaced. This should be should be checked by a mechanic before having a smog check performed on the SUV. Many states require annual smog inspections, and a problem with the EGR value could cause the vehicle to fail the emissions test.

CD Error

  • Another common error in the 2002 Ford Explorer occurs when attempting to play a CD in the compact disc player. This error code does not show up with a diagnostic computer but instead appears when using the CD player. This is a fairly common problem when playing CDs with MP3 tracks that you've burned yourself. CD-RW discs will not play in the Explorer CD player and DVD discs won't play either. Some CDs with a paper label affixed to the back of the disc can cause this error -- remove the label and try playing the CD. In addition, certain brands of CD discs will play better than others. Finding a brand that works well with the CD player in your 2002 Explorer may require some trial and error.
