How do I Clean a Mass Air Flow Sensor on a 1996 Chevrolet S-10 4.3 Litre V6?

The engine management system (EMS) in your 1996 Chevrolet S-10 4.3-liter uses the mass air flow (MAF) sensor to measure density and speed of incoming air through the air cleaner assembly. The control system then uses this information to adjust injector operation and spark timing. Sometimes, soil and other foreign particles carried by incoming air stick to and block the sensing elements inside the MAF sensor, causing the engine to stall, hesitate and operate poorly. Restore your S-10 engine performance in minutes by removing and cleaning the sensor right in your garage.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Ratchet
  • Short ratchet extension
  • Socket
  • Shop rags or old newspaper
  • Mass air flow sensor cleaner

Removing the MAF Sensor

  • Open the hood and locate the MAF sensor in the air cleaner assembly. The assembly connects the air filter box to the throttle body through a plastic duct running from the front of the engine to the back, where it connects with the throttle body to allow air to enter the intake manifold. The sensor is mounted in the air duct so that air flows through it and has an electrical connector protruding from it.

  • Unplug the MAF sensor's electrical connector and loosen the clamps holding the sensor to the air-cleaner assembly using a Phillips screwdriver.

  • Separate carefully the plastic duct from the sensor, being careful not to touch the internal wires and metal screen inside the sensor's body.

  • Unscrew the sensor from its mounting base noting the position of the sensor in the assembly so that you reinstall it in the same exact position. Use a ratchet, short ratchet extension and socket.

  • Remove the sensor from the assembly, handling it from the outer body cover only. Place a couple of shop rags or old newspaper on a workbench and place the sensor on it.

Cleaning and Reinstalling the MAF Sensor

  • Spray mass air flow sensor cleaner on the wires and screen inside the sensor's body, following the manufacturer instructions on the product's package. Turn the sensor upside down and spray more cleaner and let it air dry.

  • Place the sensor back in the assembly and install the mounting bolts finger tight and tighten the bolts with the ratchet, short ratchet extension and socket.

  • Reassemble the air cleaner components and tighten the clamps with the Phillips screwdriver.

  • Plug in the MAF sensor electrical connector.

  • Close the hood.
