How to Clean an S&B Air Filter

S&B air filters are reusable air filters for your vehicle. These filters must be cleaned annually, or once every 15,000 miles. After they are cleaned, they must also be re-oiled. S&B recommends using the S&B cleaning kit to clean the filter. The kit also comes with the proper filter oil solution. Because the process of cleaning and oiling your filter takes longer than 24 hours, make preparations not to drive your vehicle during the process. If you have a backup S&B air filter, you may want to install it while the other filter is drying.

Things You'll Need

  • S&B cleaning kit
  • Remove the filter from your vehicle. Inspect the filter to determine which side is the dirtiest. Make a small mark on the plastic edge of the dirtiest side. Lightly tap the filter against the edge of a trash bin to shake out the large particles of dirt. If you are unsure about how to remove the air filter in your specific vehicle, consult your owner's manual.

  • Bring the S&B filter to a sink. Squirt S&B filter cleaning solution on the filter, and then run warm water over the filter. Continue running the water over the filter until the runoff is clear.

  • Let the S&B filter dry for about 24 hours. Do not place it in direct sunlight and do not use unnatural heat, such as a hair dryer.

  • Bring the filter back to the sink. Hold it over the sink and start oiling the filter. Squirt a line of S&B filter oil solution onto each filter pleat. Do this only on the side that you marked as the dirtiest. Let the filter sit for a few hours.

  • Inspect the filter for areas that aren't properly oiled. These areas will be white, while the properly oiled areas will be off-white from the oil. If there are areas that require more oil, add a small bit oil the S&B filter oil solution.

  • Re-insert the S&B filter into your car's filter compartment.
