How to Replace a Mirror on a Mustang

The Ford Mustang is Ford's yearly entry into the market of performance automobiles. The Mustang is very customizable and many Mustang owners opt to customize their Mustang to give it a personal touch. Whether you want to replace the mirrors for style or because the original mirrors are broken, you will find that the process is quick and painless and only requires basic hand tools and automotive knowledge.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket set
  • 5/32-inch wrench
  • Open the door and locate the mirror assembly access panel located on the door, close to the dash. The knob for the mirror adjustment mounts to the access panel. Remove the access panel by pulling outward on it.

  • Disconnect the wiring harness that connects the motor located inside the mirror assembly with the knob located on the access panel.

  • Remove the three nuts that secure the mirror to the door that are located behind the access panel. Use a 9/16-inch deep-well socket and ratchet. Make sure you hold the mirror when you remove the last nut. This prevents the mirror from falling out and scratching the Mustang's door.

  • Pull the old mirror along with the studs out of the door.

  • Remove the studs from the old mirror with a 5/32-inch wrench and insert them into the mating side of the new mirror assembly. If replacing the mirror with a stock replacement, this step is not necessary.

  • Slide the studs of the new mirror through the door and secure it by replacing the three bolts.

  • Reconnect the wiring harness between the motor in the assembly to the switch on the access panel.

  • Place the access panel against the door frame and snap it into place by lightly striking it with the ball of your fist.
