How to Open the Hood on a 2001 Mercedes S430

The Mercedes Benz S-class is the largest four-door luxury sedan in the Mercedes Benz automobile lineup. In production since 1954, the S-class includes various models, such as the S430. Although it's a German engineered vehicle, opening the hood of your Mercedes S430 is similar to opening the hood of other vehicles. Whether you need to check the oil or you just want to take a peak at the 4.3 liter V8 housed in the engine compartment, opening the hood on the S430 is a straightforward procedure.

  • Open the driver's side door of the Mercedes S430 and locate the hood release lever below the dash and in front of the emergency brake pedal.

  • Grasp the hood release lever and pull it toward you.

  • Locate the hood release handle now protruding from the top of the grille at the front of the vehicle.

  • Pull the hood release handle toward you and simultaneously lift up on the hood.

  • Raise the hood fully. Hydraulic struts support the hood.

  • Close the hood by pulling downward on it until it's lowered approximately 75 percent. Drop the hood, allowing gravity to securely close it. The hood release handle retracts into the grille.
