How to Unlock the Doors On a Mercury Cougar XR7

The Mercury Cougar first entered the American market place in 1967 and served as Mercury's response to Ford's popular Mustang. The XR7 package came with more accessories than the base model. Even though the Mercury Cougar XR7 is considered a classic and has seen many iterations throughout the years, it is still prone to one human-caused problem: locking yourself out of the car. When you can't use your keys to get into your XR7, you can use the age-old trick of making an unlocking device from a wire coat hanger.

Things You'll Need

  • Wire coat hanger
  • Pliers
  • Unbend the wire coat hanger. You can do this by hand or with the assistance of pliers.

  • Straighten out the hanger as best as you can. You want it to be as long as possible.

  • Create a loop at the end of the wire hanger.

  • Insert the hanger, loop first, between the passenger-side window and car frame, right above the key hole.

  • Feel for a latch right above the key hole and try to get the loop through it. Lift up once you feel that the latch is securely through the loop. This will unlock your car door.
