DIY Fuel Pump Replacement

like an air or oil filter, an automotive fuel pump does not require regular replacement. However, at some point it will begin to wear out and need to be replaced, just like any other mechanical part. Most people choose to take their cars to professional dealerships or garages for this level of repair; however, learning to do it yourself can save you a bundle in labor costs. It simply requires a few hand tools and garage to work in.

Things You'll Need

  • Jack stands
  • Ratchet set in metric or standard, depending on the make of the car
  • Hydraulic jack
  • Siphon hose and collection tank
  • Remove the fuel pump fuse and start the car. Let it run until it dies. This will depressurize the fuel system.

  • Jack up the car and place it on the jack stands.

  • Support the fuel tank with the hydraulic jack and undo the harness that holds it in place. Lower the jack to lower the tank.

  • Disconnect the fuel lines and lift the fuel pump assembly from the top of the tank. Depending on the make and model of your car, this pump will either come out with the assembly as a whole, or will be attached by a bracket to the inside of the fuel tank.

  • Change out the fuel filters and reverse the steps to get the vehicle drivable again.
