How to Locate the Oxygen Sensor on a 1999 Chevy Silverado

The 1999 Chevrolet Silverado relies on a series of sensors to send reports to the truck's computer to adjust the fuel and oxygen flow for better performance. The oxygen sensors are used to judge whether the truck is running a proper fuel and air mixture. It reads the exhaust that enters and leaves the catalytic converter. A truck with two exhaust systems will have four sensors. A single exhaust system will contain two.

Things You'll Need

  • Flashlight

Bank One Oxygen Sensor

  • Ensure the Silverado is parked on a flat and level surface. Chock the back wheels and set the parking brake.

  • Crawl under the truck behind the front wheel on the driver's side. Trace the exhaust pipe from under the engine to the catalytic converter with a flashlight.

  • Locate the cylinder-shaped component bolted to the exhaust pipe before the converter. This is the bank one oxygen sensor. It has two wires connected to it.

Bank Two Oxygen Sensor

  • Crawl past the catalytic converter. Locate the exhaust pipe between the converter and the muffler.

  • Locate the sensor mounted to the exhaust pipe just after the converter. It will be bolted to the pipe in the same manner as the bank one sensor.

  • Trace the sensors on the passenger-side exhaust pipe. They will be positioned in the same manner as the driver's-side sensors before and after the catalytic converter.
