How to Reset the Oil Light in a 2006 Pontiac

Several 2006 Pontiac cars and SUVs come with an oil change reminder system. This system illuminates a light on your dash when it's time to change the oil in your Pontiac. The light commonly displays "Change Oil Soon" or "Change Engine Oil." The procedure to reset the oil light varies between Pontiac vehicles. However, resetting the light in your 2006 Pontiac G6, GTO or Torrent is a simple procedure.

2006 Pontiac G6

  • Crank your G6's engine. Press the "i" button on the dash-control panel. The small window in the speedometer case will change from "Change Oil Soon" to "Reset Oil Life."

  • Press and hold the backward-facing arrow button on the dash control panel.

  • Wait five seconds then release the arrow button when the display shows "Acknowledged." This tells you the light is reset.

2006 Pontiac GTO

  • Turn the ignition to "On." Don't start the GTO's engine.

  • Pump the gas pedal twice within five seconds, allowing the pedal to retract each time. Be sure to push the pedal all the way to the floor.

  • Turn the ignition to "Lock," then turn it back to "On" or crank the GTO's engine. The light is now reset.

2006 Pontiac Torrent

  • Turn the ignition to "Run." Don't start the Torrent's engine.

  • Pump the gas pedal three times within five seconds, letting the pedal retract fully each time. Be sure to push the pedal all the way to the floor. The "Change Oil" light will start to flash.

  • Turn the ignition to "Lock" after the light stops flashing. This takes about five seconds. Turn the ignition back on. The light is now reset.
