The Honda Civic automatic transmission is normally a reliable piece of equipment--provided, however, that you do regular maintenance on it. For the most part, this will only involve changing the transmission oil at regular intervals. Because of the sensitive nature of the oil seals in Honda transmissions, Honda recommends that you only use Honda automatic transmission fluid when replacing the fluid.
Place wheel ramps under the front wheels of the Civic
Drive the Civic up onto the wheel ramps until the wheels settle into the cradle on the ramp.
Place a catch pan underneath the transmission.
Remove the transmission drain bolt located on the side of the transmission. The specific location will vary depending on the year of your Civic.
Allow the transmission fluid to drain into the catch pan and then thread and retighten the transmission drain bolt.
Open the hood and remove the transmission dip stick.
Place a funnel into the transmission filler opening where you removed the dipstick from.
Pour in fresh transmission oil. The amount of oil will vary depending on the year of your Civic and the engine size and code (as different transmissions are mated to different engines).
