Jetta TDI Maintenance

The Volkswagen Jetta inline-four cylinder turbocharged direct injection engine (or TDI) is renown for its reliability and durability, with some engines running over 300,000 miles before needing major service. With a careful eye toward maintenance, you can help your Jetta TDI live a long and healthy life.

Every 250 Miles or Weekly

  • Check the engine oil level and keep a record from week to week. Oil consumption can be a sign of a leaking gasket or oil blowing past the piston rings. Check the coolant level, both in the radiator and the overflow tank. Examine the coolant for signs of oil, rust or other contaminants. Refill the windshield washer tank. Check the tire pressures and inspect the tire treads. The Jetta's tires should wear evenly across the width of the tire. If they do not, it could be a sign of incorrect tire pressures or damaged steering or suspension components.

Every 7,500 Miles or Six months

  • Change the engine oil and oil filter. Examine the used oil for signs of coolant, which could be a sign of an internal leak, or small metal shavings that can damage internal components. Remove the front wheels and brake calipers, and check the front brake pads for wear. If Jetta's are worn more on one side have the rotors checked and or machined. Examine the wiper blades. If the rubber is dried out or cracked, replace them. Rotate the tires. Check the Jetta's battery for corrosion at the terminals and rust on the battery tray. Drain the water from the fuel filter. Examine the body and frame for signs of rust. Treat rust immediately by cleaning with a wire brush and covering with a rust sealing paint.

  • Check the Jetta's coolant hoses, brake lines and fuel lines for signs of leaks. Check the rear brake shoes or pads for minimum thickness and uneven wear. Check the parking brake cables for fraying or kinking. Examine the exhaust system for rust and leaks. Check the steering rack and suspension components for wear. Examine the drive axle boots, replace of torn.

Every 30,000 Miles or Two years

  • Replace the engine air filter and cabin air filter. Replace the automatic transmission fluid. Check the manual transmission fluid level. Examine the drive belts, replace as needed. Check the timing belt.
