There are many different wiper blades available. One of the most popular and respected brands is Rain X. Installing them is usually a very simple project requiring few tools.
Measure your existing wiper blades, from end to end length wise.
Make sure to measure both blades and keep note--often times the blade sizes are different. It is best to measure this in millimeters.
For example, the passenger side wiper blade on a '02 Chevrolet Cavalier is 425mm (16.7 inches) and the driver side is 550mm (22 inches).
Determine which setup you have on your vehicle for mounting the blade.
Hook-slot: your wiper arm ends in a hook with a slot on the wiper blade that it hooks to. This is the most common on newer vehicles.
Pin system: there is a pin holding the wiper arm to the blade. This pin is held in place by either a push tab or a pull tab and might not be immediately noticeable depending on your application. Make sure that your wipers include the pin and/or an
Straight end: this method is mostly used on old vehicles. The wiper arm will end in a straight end as the name suggests. It will be attached using either clips or two screws. Normally, you just need to make sure your wiper has the tabs or holes to support this. Some wipers may contain an adapter kit or may require you to purchase it separately.
Remove the old wiper blades. See below for instructions on each type:
Hook: lift your existing blade off the windshield and find the release tab on it. A common place for this is on the underside. It will be directly attached to the blade and arm. Press this tab in firmly and slide the blade towards the hood. (Follow the wiper arm angle; remember this is a hook and it needs to slide backwards to be removed.)
Pin: lift the blade off of the windshield and locate the pin. This pin may be hidden under a tab used to secure it. Once located, you will need to either lift the pin out or push it out by using a small disposable pen. If the pen does not work for lifting it out, use a standard screwdriver to pry it out.
Straight edge: the method of removing this type of blade differs greatly as there is no accepted standard for mounting these. The most common are tabs (press the tab(s) on the wiper arm to remove) and screws. Simply unscrew the old blade from the arm if this is the case.
Install the new blades.
Hook: slide the blade into the wiper arm assembly. You will hear an audible snap when the blade is secured properly.
Pin: place the new blade into the wiper arm and insert the new connecting pin. If you received a conversion kit, follow the instructions included as these kits can vary greatly.
Straight edge: you will either need to snap the new blade into the mounting holes, or, in the case of screw retained blades, hold the blade up to the arm so that the screw holes line up. Then insert the screws carefully; it is very easy to cross thread these, so pay attention at this point.
Use your windshield washers for 30 seconds to break in the new blade and ensure that it does not smear noticeably.
