How to Replace the Rear Side Window in a Dodge Van

Windows on vehicles can become damaged due to a variety of reasons. Having the rear side window of a Dodge van replaced by a body shop is a costly expense. Besides having to pay for the window, you will also have to pay for labor. However, it is possible to do this project yourself. You can expect to spend the better part of a day on this project. It is best to have another adult help you replace the window.

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdriver
  • Duct tape
  • Suction-cup device
  • Sealant or silicone

Remove the Old Window

  • Remove the rear side window plastic molding by pulling it out starting at the seam.

  • Detach the plastic clips that hold the window in place. Some models may use metal clips. In either case, you should be able to pull the clips out by hand. Use a screwdriver to lightly pry them out.

  • Slice the sealant holding the window in place. Have another person hold the window in place while you slice. If no one is available, use duct tape to hold it in place.

  • Push gently on the window from the inside to remove it. Your helper will have to help you guide the glass out of the frame. If no one is available to help you, stand on the outside of the glass and gently pull on the window with a suction cup device. A toilet plunger is one option. Place the glass in a safe place for disposal later.

  • Wipe out the window frame. Dirt and other debris can affect the placement of the new glass.

Installing the New Glass

  • Place the new glass into the window frame from the outside. Have your helper hold it there. If you are doing this alone, use duct tape to secure it while you work.

  • Apply clear glass sealant or silicone around the window. Do this in a thin line on both the inside and outside of the window.

  • Replace the clips. They must snap into place.

  • Push the plastic molding into place. The seam should be in the middle of the bottom of the window.
