The voltage regulator in a Ford F-Series truck is contained within the alternator. This device must be removed and disassembled if the voltage regulator is to be replaced. You should only perform this maintenance if the truck has a gasoline-engine alternator.
Remove the alternator from the Ford's engine. Make sure you disconnect the negative battery cable before removing it or working on any electrical components. You must also detach the drive belt before removing all the alternator's connectors, nuts and bolts.
Disconnect the brush and terminal holder, which holds the voltage regulator, from the alternator. Remove the four screws from the regulator.
Separate the voltage regulator from the alternator brush and terminal holder. Remove the screw cap and then the screws holding the alternator brush and terminal holder to the regulator.
Install the replacement voltage regulator onto the brush and terminal holder. Place the brush and holder in the correct position on the regulator and install the brush and holder screws. Install the screw cap, making sure it's over test terminal A.
Connect the brush and terminal holder and voltage regulator back to the alternator. Press the brushes and hold them down with a wire, place the brush and terminal holder and voltage regulator in position and attach the voltage regulator screws.
Reinstall the alternator to the engine. Attach the drive belt and reconnect the negative battery cable.
