How to Replace a Headlight Bulb in an Oldsmobile Alero

If one of the headlight bulbs on your Oldsmobile Alero breaks or burns out, replace it as soon as possible to stay safe on the road. Though the process may seem challenging, it's actually pretty simple--even people with no mechanical expertise should be able to finish the repair in a matter of minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • #9006 and #9005 replacement bulbs (low- and high-beam bulbs)
  • Shut off your Alero's engine and turn the headlamp switch to "OFF." Open the hood using the primary and auxiliary hood release latches.

  • Lift the headlight assembly up and forward to disengage its mounting brackets. Gently rest the assembly on the front bumper before proceeding.

  • Remove the rubber cap covering the bulb socket and set in on the ground next to the car.

  • Twist the bulb socket retainer one-sixth of a turn counterclockwise and pull the socket out.

  • Unclip the bulb socket from the wiring harness.

  • Extract the old bulb from the socket and replace it with the new bulb. Then, repeat Steps 3 through 5 in reverse to reassemble the headlight assembly.

  • Slide the assembly back into place, start the engine and test the new bulb to make sure it works before closing the hood.
