How to Replace the Valve Cover Gasket in a Dodge Intrepid

If you have not performed maintenance on your Dodge Intrepid or it has been a while since you performed the necessary maintenance, you may find that your Dodge Intrepid has an oil leak or there is smoke coming from the engine. This is likely the result of your needing to replace your valve cover gasket.

Things You'll Need

  • Valve cover gasket
  • Spark plug tool
  • Screwdriver
  • Torque wrench
  • Automotive engine cleaner
  • Visit your local automotive store and purchase the necessary supplies. If you do not have the appropriate tools you will need to purchase them as well. Select a location that will permit you to do automotive repairs on site.

  • Allow the car engine to cool by letting the car sit idle for several hours. Lift the hood and disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the upper intake manifold assembly. Using the spark plug tool, remove the spark plugs. Disconnect the spark plug wires. This can be accomplished by pulling straight out on the boot. Locate the cylinder head and disconnect the closed ventilation system and evaporation control system from it.

  • Locate the left cylinder head cover and remove the DIS coil. Using the wrench, loosen and remove the rocker arm cover mounting bolts. Carefully remove the rocker arm cover from the cylinder head. Remove the gasket cover. Using the screwdriver, gently nudge the gasket to remove it from the seating area.

  • Using the automotive cleaner, remove any particles, oil or other remnants that were left by the old gasket. Place the new gasket in the gasket seating area. Using the torque wrench, tighten the rocker arm cover fasteners. Reverse the steps used to remove the parts

  • Complete the maintenance by adding oil to the car and allowing it to run idle for 10 to 15 minutes.
