What Makes Your Car Drive Rough?

A car may drive rough for any number of mechanical reasons. Long-lasting damage might occur if the problem is not addressed quickly enough. It is important to diagnose the problem and have it repaired as soon as possible.

Spark Plugs

  • If your car sounds especially rough at high speeds, the problem could lie with the car's spark plugs and wires. Spark plugs fire more frequently the faster you drive, and the engine will sound rough when they begin to fail.

Vacuum Leak

  • Sometimes a vacuum leak will make itself known with a whistling noise. When there is a problem with the vacuum, the air to fuel ratio is disrupted, causing a rough drive or idle. This problem can cause misfiring of the engine, hesitation when accelerating and stalling.

Fuel Injector

  • Problems with the fuel injector are common in cars with high mileage. If the fuel injector is clogged, it may cause the engine to misfire. This can lead to a rough drive or idle. Adding fuel-system cleaner to your gas tank is a way of possibly solving this problem.
