Nissan SD33T Specifications

Made popular by its use in the Nissan Patrol, this mid-80s (1983-1987) supercharged engine is still sought after by some car enthusiasts today. International-Harvester also used this engine in their Scouts as an efficient diesel alternative to some of the other gas-hungry engines on the market. The original SD33 was yellow, but the supercharged SD33T was blue.

Numbers

  • The SD33T is a 3.3 liter, 6-cylinder, water-cooled, 101-horsepower diesel engine. The engine weighs 672 pounds. Its maximum output is105 PS at 3,800 rpm and its maximum torque is 175 foot-pounds at 2,200 rpm. The bore and stroke is 83 millimeters by 100 millimeters. The compression ratio is 20.8:1 and the piston displacement is 3,246 cc. It averages about 25 miles per gallon.

Construction

  • The cylinder block is high-strength cast iron. It has replaceable dry liners. The cylinder head is constructed of a single piece of high-strength cast iron with cast iron, shrink-fitted valve inserts. The cam shaft is cast iron that has undergone a special process to increase hardness and improve durability. The crankshaft is drop-forged steel. Induction-hardened surfaces are on all main and connecting rods. Aluminum in the pistons is strong, lightweight and has good thermal conductivity. The compressions and oil rings are chrome-plated to extend their life. The precision bearings are of steel-backed tri-metal shell. The overhead valves are of special heat-resistant steel with an additional stellite-treated surface on the exhaust valve.

  • The fuel filter is a replaceable-cartridge type with an overflow valve. The air filter is a replaceable dry-paper type. The exhaust manifold is a flange type with a rear side-facing outlet. It has a piston-injected fuel pump. The oil pump has a replaceable cartridge and the oil pan is of pressed steel. The water pump is a centrifugal, belt-driven type. The alternator is a 12-volt,35-amp alternator.
