Subaru Outback Fluid Specifications

Enthusiasts have long known about Subaru's off-road capabilities and triumphs in the rally scene, but more recent models, like the Outback, also show off the automaker's versatility. This go-anywhere wagon gained a complete refresh for 2015, and to keep it in top condition you should always make certain that the various mechanical systems have the correct amount and type of fluids.

Engine Oil

  • The 2015 Outback's 2.5-liter engine requires 5.1 quarts of 0W-20 synthetic engine oil in all temperatures, while Subaru recommends 6.9 quarts of 5W-30 oil in its 3.6-liter engine, but 10W-30 or 10W-40 oil is an acceptable replacement in temperatures above 0 degrees F.

Transmission Oil

  • With the 2.5-liter, the continuously variable transmission requires 12.9 to 13.4 quarts of Subaru CVT oil for the Lineartronic, while the CVT in the 3.6-liter engine need 10.1 to 10.6 quarts of the same fluid. The six-speed manual transmission requires 3.5 quarts of Subaru Extra MT.

Coolant

  • The 2.5-liter engine needs 2.4 gallons of Subaru Diluted Super Coolant with the manual transmission and 2.37 gallons with the CVT. The 3.5-liter engine needs 2.07 gallons of the same coolant.

Differential Oil

  • The Outback's front differential requires 1.4 to 1.5 quarts of GL-5 differential oil with the 2.5-liter engine, while the 3.5-liter engine requires 1.4 to 1.6 quarts of GL-5 gear oil. The rear differential requires 0.8 quarts regardless of the engine.

Power Steering Fluid

  • The 2015 Outback's power steering system requires 0.7 quarts of Subaru PS Fluid.

Brake and Clutch Fluid

  • The 2015 Outback's brake system requires DOT 3 or DOT 4 brake fluid, while the clutch requires DOT 3 fluid. Subaru does not list a specific capacity for the brake and clutch fluids, but rather states just to make sure their respective levels are between the "Min" and "Max" lines on their reservoirs.
