The 1156 incandescent bulb is an automotive bulb of the type S8 that is primarily used for turn signal lamps. It has a bayonet mount, is 2 inches long and comes in a range of colors. This S8 bulb can be used also in other bayonet-mount fixtures, such as the interior of a camper. It is a 13-volt bulb.
Lumens, or light output, for the 1156 incandescent is 402. This is about equivalent to a powerful flashlight or a small interior bulb. The energy draw is 27 watts. As an alternative to the energy demands of incandescent bulbs, you can find LED bulbs that will fit the bayonet mounts at around 20 percent of the wattage with equivalent light output, which saves energy if it is being used in a truck, trailer or automotive interior, but has a different quality of light.
The 1156 comes in a standard clear color, as well as amber. For non-standard usages it can also be purchased in red, blue, green and purple. The similar LEDs can also be found in a range of colors.
The average lifetime of the 1156 incandescent is 1,200 hours, which is about equal to a household incandescent. LED equivalents have a longer life, but are also more costly.
