Specifications for Torque on a Head Bolt on a Volkswagen

Volkswagen, also known as VW, was founded in 1937 as an automobile manufacturer. It has since diversified its assets, producing numerous engines that it uses in its vehicles. The company places its engines in all of its vehicles. Although only a few engines are listed below, the company has manufactured more than 40 engines, many of which have been discontinued or replaced.

Cylinder Head

Torque

For this sequence, begin torquing with the center-most bolt and work outward in both directions evenly. If there are multiple steps, torque all of the bolts to the first requirement, then torque all of the bolts in the same order to the next torque requirement. Wait about 15 minutes between each step to allow the bolts to stretch and settle before applying more torque.

1.8L S4

  • The cylinder head in VW's 1.8L engine requires three steps to receive 30 foot-pounds of torque to attach to the engine block; it doesn't matter what those steps are, as long as they are distinct. The 10mm bolts of the exhaust manifold attach to the cylinder head with 30 foot-pounds of torque; the 8mm nuts attach with 18 foot-pounds. The intake manifold in the multi-port fuel injection 1.8L engine requires 18 foot-pounds of torque to attach to the cylinder head; in the single-port injection engine and the turbo engine, it requires 7 foot-pounds.

2.8L V6

  • In VW's 2.8L V6 engine, the cylinder head attaches to the engine block first with 30 foot-pounds of torque, then with 44 foot-pounds. Both the exhaust manifold and the intake manifold require 18 foot-pounds of torque to join properly with the cylinder head.

2.0L S4

  • The cylinder head in the 2.0L S4 engine attaches to the engine block first with 30 foot-pounds of torque, then with 44 foot-pounds. The exhaust manifold bolts to the cylinder head with 18 foot-pounds of torque. The intake manifold in the multi-port fuel injection 2.0L engine requires 18 foot-pounds of torque, and the intake manifold in the single-point inject engine requires 7 foot-pounds of torque to attach with the cylinder head.
